7 Tips For Avoiding Scratching Eczema Rash

Eczema is a chronic skin condition with rash-like symptoms and has no cure. Eczema goes hand in hand with dry, itchy skin that makes your child rub or scratch the affected area. However, scratching can lead to damaged nerve endings and sensitive skin, with the risk of  infection, further inflammation and increased risk of scarring once the skin heals over.

The body’s C-fibre nerves are responsible for transmitting the itching signal to the brain. To reduce itchiness, you need to suppress your child’s C-fibre endings that gives the brain the itch signal. Here are a few ways to do this:

  1. Ice

Icing the itchy area numbs the C-fibres from transmitting the itch signals to the brain. If your child’s eczema itches at night, hold an ice pack over the itchy area for a few minutes or until the itch sensation goes away.

  1. Massage

Massages are usually a mix of pleasure and pain and this distracts the brain. If your child experiences itchiness, try massaging another area of the body to create a sensation away from the itching spot.

  1. Focusing On Other Sensations

If your child has an itchy leg, try creating another sensation on another part of the body such as their arm. Taking your child for a walk, performing an exercise, or creating some sort of strain on another area of the body can take their brain off the itchiness.

  1. Pat or Blow The Skin

Patting or blowing the itchy part of the skin creates a sensation capable of disrupting the itching signal. If your child is usually itchy at night, have them blow or pat the skin as opposed to scratching.

  1. Moisturise

If your child has burning, inflamed, or red eczema, you need to “put out the fire”, so to speak. A good moisturiser specially formulated for eczema-prone skin can be very effective. Look for one with anti-itch properties to help soothe skin and reduce burning and stinging.

  1. Epsom Bath Salts

Epsom bath salts can provide effective relief against itchiness. Soaking the affected area in Epsom bath salts helps to soothe the affected area and balance the pH level.

  1. Getting Busy

If your child continues to feel the urge to scratch, try getting them to do something else that requires much concentration. Getting them to help clean their room, or playing a video game can disrupt the itching signal to their brain and make the urge to scratch dissipate.
